Dr McAndrew’s office had not been hard to find. Having somehow anticipated Ezra’s whereabouts, Elijah’s PA bracelet had furnished him with a route straight to her door. The hard part was deciding what to do about the three hulking men and their equally intimidating arsenal. He was not sure that he was a match for any one of them, let alone all three. Assuming there were still three of them...

His ascent had been delayed. The elevator had stopped a number of times, either to disgorge its load of passengers, or to admit those who could not be swayed with an intimidating glare. By the time he arrived at the one hundred and sixty-sixth floor, Ezra Caine and his escort were nowhere to be seen. His PA, having somehow anticipated his predicament, had then directed him to the doctor’s office.

The door opened. Two of the heavies, recognisable by their brutish demeanour and the familiar blue Emergency Response Team uniforms, stepped out into the corridor and started walking back towards the lifts. The odds were beginning to look better.

As soon as they were out of sight, Elijah approached the door. He could hear voices. The first, a female voice, seemed to be doing most of the talking. A second male voice interjected from time to time with just an occasional slurred word. Elijah kept his hand firmly on the Glock in his pocket, with his fingertip resting near the trigger. He hoped he wouldn’t have to use it.

The voices stopped. He could hear someone approaching the door.

Elijah ducked away.

The door opened. The last of the heavies exited, pushing a man in a wheelchair ahead of him. Elijah could not see the man’s face, but some instinct, as primal as breathing, assured him this was Ezra Caine. The wiry frame and familiar suit were slim reassurance as to why this man seemed so familiar… Elijah knew him…

There was a waiting area a short distance from the office. An elderly man was sitting slumped in one of the chairs, barely aware of his surroundings. The nurse sitting next to him continued to stare at the wall, blank-faced and bored, and seemingly unperturbed by the armed men that had just wandered past. Either gun-toting security guards were an everyday occurrence, or she had such blind faith in the corporation she did not question the sight.

Making every attempt to look casual, Elijah turned into the waiting area and took a seat next to the old man.

Then, having developed a sudden fascination in the subtleties of floor design, he waited for the guard to shamble by.

His instincts told him to leave – to take the first elevator back down to the disc and make his escape – but some intangible hand, some extension of Antoine’s will, held him back. He knew what he had to do…
